<p>Have you ever looked around during <strong>share time</strong> and noticed students flipping through journals, fixing their work, erasing mistakes, or staring down at their paper instead of listening? It can feel frustrating because this is often the moment where the richest learning is supposed to happen.</p>



<p>The truth is, many disengaged students are not refusing to participate—they are responding to the environment we created with the best intentions. Sometimes, what we think is helping students stay focused is actually pulling their attention away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Hidden Mistake</h2>



<p>When it is time to share, many teachers ask students to bring their journals, pencils, or papers to the carpet. It seems logical: students can follow along, compare strategies, and connect the discussion to their own work.</p>



<p>But often the <em>opposite</em> happens. Instead of listening to the student sharing, students start fixing, finishing, doodling, or obsessing over whether their own answer is correct. Their materials become the focus instead of the mathematical thinking in the room.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Real Purpose of Math Share Time</h2>



<p>Let’s zoom out for a second. The purpose of share time is not for students to look at their own work or check if they got the right answer. <em>The purpose is to understand someone else’s thinking, notice different strategies, and make connections between ideas.</em></p>



<p>When students are distracted by their own papers, we lose momentum. We lose opportunities for discourse. We lose the kind of <strong>student engagement</strong> that leads to deeper understanding.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Students We Often Overlook</h2>



<p>There is another layer to this that matters deeply. When students are asked to bring their work to the carpet, the students who need the share time most are often the ones unintentionally shut out of it.</p>



<p>These are the students who felt confused, got stuck, or were unsure how to begin. Instead of listening to the strategy being shared, they may sit there staring at a blank page or worrying that others will notice they did not get it.</p>



<p>But when students leave their papers behind, <em>everything changes</em>. Now their job is to listen, understand, and make sense of someone else’s thinking. That creates real access for <strong>every learner</strong>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Simple Shift That Changes Everything</h2>



<p><strong>Here is the move: no journals, no pencils, no papers during share time. </strong>When it is time to gather, students bring only their listening ears and open minds.</p>



<p>Now the expectation becomes clear: <em>listen, think, compare strategies, and make sense of someone else’s reasoning. </em>Without materials competing for attention, students are more available for the discussion happening right in front of them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why This Supports Real Student Engagement</h2>



<p>Every extra object in a student’s hand competes for attention. Removing those distractions is not about control—it is about <em>protecting focus</em> so students can engage in the learning that matters most.</p>



<p>This small shift creates access for more learners, especially students who need to hear peer thinking, see multiple approaches, and participate without the pressure of having the answer first. That is how stronger math communities are built.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Great Teaching Is Often a Small Shift</h2>



<p>I am always thinking about how we can improve instruction without adding more to a teacher’s already full plate. Great teaching is rarely about doing more. It is about noticing what matters most and doubling down on it.</p>



<p>Sometimes the smallest routine change unlocks better discussions, stronger thinking, and more authentic <strong>student engagement</strong>.</p>

<p>Let’s talk classroom management &#8211; and more <strong>specifically, proactive classroom management during math time</strong>. </p>



<p>Because if you’ve ever felt like math class turns into organized chaos the moment manipulatives come out or you start group work,<em> you’re not alone</em>.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s very normal to maintain a more reactive state when we&#8217;re teaching &#8211; which leads to stress and power struggles.</p>



<p>But if we can go in with a more proactive classroom management style, we can all have a more positive learning experience.</p>



<p>Every community has problems, and that includes classroom communities. </p>



<p>Students make mistakes. </p>



<p>They get distracted. </p>



<p>They make bad choices. </p>



<p>That&#8217;s completely expected, and even developmentally appropriate (and part of the human condition).</p>



<p>But it’s how we<em> respond</em> that either strengthens or breaks that community.</p>



<p>So today, let’s talk about <strong>how to manage your classroom during math time</strong> in a way that builds trust, maintains expectations, and supports students as growing humans <em>and</em> mathematicians.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">First, a Mindset Shift: Proactive Classroom Management <em>Is</em> Community Work</h2>



<p>If you’re still thinking of classroom management as something separate from your math instruction—, <em>then <strong>let’s change that</strong></em>. </p>



<p>Because classroom management is <strong>communication</strong>. It’s how we teach students:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>What’s expected of them</li>



<li>What happens when those expectations aren’t met</li>



<li>And how we respond when things go off the rails</li>
</ul>



<p>And during math time, this work is especially important.</p>



<p>Because math often brings out big emotions, self-doubt, and resistance in students.</p>



<p><em>(you know that “Can I go to the bathroom?” right as you hand out the task?)</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Is Proactive Classroom Management?</h2>



<p>When it comes down to it, proactive classroom management is all about intention.</p>



<p><em><strong>Reactive classroom management</strong></em> happens in the moment &#8211; when a student blurts out, misuses materials, or disrupts learning, and the teacher responds to stop the behavior. While sometimes necessary, reactive strategies often focus more on control than connection. </p>



<p><em><strong>Proactive  classroom management</strong></em>, on the other hand, is all about setting up structures, expectations, and routines <em>before</em> issues arise. </p>



<p>It means intentionally teaching procedures, offering clear choices, and building relationships so that students know what’s expected, and feel safe and motivated to meet those expectations. </p>



<p>Proactive classroom management reduces the need for constant correction because it creates a predictable, respectful classroom where students are set up to succeed.</p>



<p>One example of this, is teaching students how to apologize in advance before someone makes a mistake or hurts someone else&#8217;s feelings.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Four Agreements to Ground Your Classroom Management</h2>



<p>Before we talk strategy, let’s make four big agreements:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>All students can be in control of their behavior</strong><br>Just like we believe all students can do math, we believe they can make good choices—especially with our support.<br><br></li>



<li><strong>We respond to mistakes with empathy</strong><br>Your students aren’t misbehaving <em>at</em> you. They’re learning how to belong in a community.<br><br></li>



<li><strong>Choice = agency and dignity</strong><br>Giving students real choices throughout the day helps preserve their self-worth—even when they’re being redirected.<br><br></li>



<li><strong>Do something when something happens</strong><br>Consequences don’t need to be harsh—but they do need to exist. Silence is permission.<br></li>
</ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The 4-Step Response for Math Time Behavior Challenges</h2>



<p>Instead of snapping, shouting, or freezing up (we’ve all been there!), try this simple, repeatable approach:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Scan the Pool</strong> (Observe)</h3>



<p>Think like a lifeguard. </p>



<p>Constantly look around. </p>



<p>Notice who’s engaged, who’s distracted, who’s flailing. </p>



<p>Don&#8217;t assume, just observe.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Seek to Understand</strong></h3>



<p>Before you act, pause. </p>



<p>Ask: <em>Why might this be happening?</em> </p>



<p><em>Is the student off-task because the work is hard? </em></p>



<p><em>Because they’re confused? </em></p>



<p><em>Because they’re trying to get attention? </em></p>



<p>Let them explain.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. <strong>Use Enforceable Language + Choices</strong></h3>



<p><strong>Instead of power struggles, offer clear, calm boundaries:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>“You’re welcome to stay at the carpet if your voice is off and you’re listening.”</li>



<li>“You can use the connecting cubes the right way, or I’ll put them away for today.”</li>



<li>“You can go to the bathroom after you finish the first two problems.”</li>
</ul>



<p>These aren’t threats&#8217;;they’re choices with logical outcomes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. <strong>Debrief and Repair Later</strong></h3>



<p>You don’t have to solve everything <em>in the moment</em>. </p>



<p>Delay the consequence if needed, and return to it later during recess, choice time, or a quiet moment:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>“You were feeling frustrated and called out. What happened?”</li>



<li>“What could you try next time?”</li>



<li>“Would you like to hear some of my ideas?”</li>
</ul>



<p>This builds trust, and it helps students grow in self-awareness.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Real Scenarios, Real Solutions</h2>



<p>Here are some common <strong>math class behavior issues</strong>, and how you can use the 4-step strategy to handle them:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Student won’t get started</em></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Observe: </strong>Are they stuck on the first step?</li>



<li><strong>Ask: </strong>“What’s your plan for getting started?”</li>



<li><strong>Offer: </strong>“You can take a break now or start with problem #1.”</li>



<li><strong>Debrief:</strong> “What kept you from starting today? What could help tomorrow?”</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Students keep chatting during work time</em></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Observe:</strong> Are they off-task or collaborating (loudly)?</li>



<li><strong>Say: </strong>“You’re welcome to work together as long as everyone stays focused.”</li>



<li><strong>Action:</strong> “I’m moving you to a solo spot for now—you can rejoin when you’re ready.”</li>



<li><strong>Debrief: </strong>“What happened during partner work? How can we do it differently?”</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Misusing manipulatives</em></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Observe:</strong> Are they building towers? Tossing them?</li>



<li><strong>Say:</strong> “We use math tools like this…” (demonstrate)</li>



<li><strong>If it continues:</strong> Take them away for the day.</li>



<li><strong>Debrief: </strong>“Why do you think I had to take away the cubes? What can we try next time?”</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Power of a Calm, Consistent Response</h2>



<p>When your students know:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>You’re watching (but not judging)</li>



<li>You’ll listen before acting</li>



<li>They’ll always have a choice</li>



<li>And you&#8217;ll always follow up with care&#8230;</li>
</ul>



<p>That’s when your classroom community begins to <em>trust</em> you. </p>



<p>And trust is what creates an environment where real math learning can happen &#8211; even when things get messy.</p>



<p>Consistent, and calm.</p>



<p>Firm, but fair.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts for the Frazzled Teacher</h2>



<p>Let’s be real: <strong>classroom management during math time</strong> is hard.</p>



<p>Classroom management is always hard, and it&#8217;s<em> especiall</em>y hard if you&#8217;re within your first few years of being in the classroom.</p>



<p>I want to recognize that.</p>



<p>But if you treat behavior as just another form of student learning, you’ll start to see it for what it is: an opportunity to teach, support, and connect.</p>



<p>And the best part? </p>



<p>When students feel supported instead of shamed,<em> they rise to the occasion. </em></p>



<p>You’re not just managing behavior; you’re building a community of mathematicians who feel safe to think, struggle, and grow.</p>

<p>The truth is, the <strong>questions we ask students</strong> don’t just check for understanding; they create it. </p>



<p>When we rely on questions like <em>Does that make sense?</em>, we often get those polite nods or blank stares. </p>



<p>But when we ask something like <em>What does this number represent?</em>, students start making connections, talking to each other, and explaining their ideas in ways that show real understanding.</p>



<p><em>That’s</em> the magic of asking the right questions.</p>



<p>Today, I’m sharing <strong>7 types of powerful questions to ask students</strong> that will help you move beyond quick answers and really open up student thinking in your math classroom. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The &#8220;Why&#8221;: We Need to Ask Students Better Questions</h2>



<p>Today, I’m so excited to dig into one of the most common questions I get:</p>

</blockquote>



<p>It’s such a simple question, yet <em>so</em> important. </p>



<p>Because the questions we ask shape the thinking our students do. </p>



<p>The right questions unlock student reasoning, deepen understanding, and spark those “aha!” moments.</p>



<p>It might sound simple, but this is truly one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves as math educators.</p>



<p>The questions we choose shape the thinking our students do. </p>



<p>They guide where students look, how they process ideas, and what connections they make. </p>



<p>Questions are like the <strong>steering wheel </strong>of your math lesson.</p>



<p><strong>When we ask purposeful questions,</strong> we don’t just check for the right answer. </p>



<p>We create opportunities for students to reason, explore, and share their thinking in ways that build real understanding. </p>



<p>We help them feel confident, capable, and excited to participate.</p>



<p>Good questions can unlock student reasoning, deepen understanding, and spark those joyful “aha” moments that make math feel meaningful.</p>



<p>In my approach, questioning is not about funneling students toward one correct line of thinking or following a script. I</p>



<p>t is about creating a space where students can truly make sense of math, build on each other’s ideas, and see themselves as problem solvers.</p>



<p>Imagine a classroom where students talk more than you do. </p>



<p>A space where they feel safe to share their ideas, even when they are still figuring them out. </p>



<p>A place where every student feels seen and valued because their thinking matters.</p>



<p>This is the power of intentional, thoughtful questioning.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Making Sense Questions</h2>



<p>Before solving, students need to <em>make sense</em> of the problem. </p>



<p>Instead of diving straight into numbers, encourage them to slow down and understand what’s happening.</p>



<p><strong>Ask questions like:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><em>What’s going on here?</em></li>



<li><em>What is this story about?</em></li>



<li><em>What are you trying to figure out?</em></li>
</ul>



<p>These questions help students move from just grabbing numbers to deeply understanding the context.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding the Problem Questions</h2>



<p>Take it a step further by helping students understand what the numbers <em>mean</em>.</p>



<p><strong>Ask:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><em>What does this number represent?</em></li>



<li><em>Is this number a part, a total, or something else?</em></li>
</ul>



<p>When students consider what each number represents, they stop mindlessly circling or copying numbers and start reasoning about what to do with them. </p>



<p>You want your students to understand the <em>story</em> behind the numbers.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Decision-Making Support Questions</h2>



<p>We want students to make thoughtful choices, not just follow steps.</p>



<p>Try asking:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><em>Why did you decide to do that?</em></li>



<li><em>What made you choose that first step?</em></li>
</ul>



<p>Students might initially think they’ve done something wrong and start erasing .</p>



<p>But reassure them!</p>



<p>The goal is to understand their reasoning. </p>



<p>Then, eventually, be able to critique and correct their own reasoning.</p>

<p>Connect today’s problem to past experiences to build a flexible problem-solver’s mindset.</p>

<li><em>What does this remind you of?</em></li>



<li><em>What’s familiar here?</em></li>
</ul>



<p>These questions help students realize they already have strategies they can use, reducing feelings of overwhelm and empowering them to move forward with confidence.</p>

<p>Create a mistake-friendly classroom culture where errors are seen as learning opportunities.</p>

<li><em>What clue told you to double-check your work?</em></li>
</ul>

<p>Help students develop their mathematical intuition and confidence in their own reasoning.</p>

<li><em>What makes you feel sure this is correct?</em></li>
</ul>



<p>Encourage students to self-assess and possibly solve in another way to confirm their thinking. </p>



<p>This builds independence and shifts the responsibility for accuracy to the student.</p>

<li><em>What new strategy did you learn?</em></li>
</ul>



<p>Reflection helps students consolidate learning and become more aware of their mathematical thinking &#8211; a powerful way to close the loop on each lesson.</p>

									<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">Have you ever sat in a data meeting staring at your students’ data feeling overwhelmed?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;"> Let me tell you a quick story. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">I started my career as a ½ multiage teacher then taught first grade for a year– oh my goodness there is a lot of energy and singing in 1st grade. Anyway, after 4 years in ½ I was moved to 3r grade. When my principal told me about the move I instantly panicked. 3rd grade is the first testing year and I was terrified. Fast forward to the PD week prior to the start of my first year teaching 3rd grade we had a data meeting. The state test scores from the previous spring were printed out into thick packets and placed on the table in front of each 3rd and 4th grade teacher. We were asked to flip through and make notices and wonderings. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">I was sick. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">The scores were terrible. I had no idea what it meant and how to help improve it</span><span style="font-weight: 300;"><br /></span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">You can think of this as the methods. Methods that include mental methods, methods with manipulatives or calculators, written procedures. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;">It is essential that students can do basic computation without the need to draw it out, use a table, etc. This relies on procedural fluency, to be able to compute written and mentally with all 4 operations fluency. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 300;"><strong>Accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility are key.</strong> Students should use procedures to carry out computation efficiently and result in correct answers. But also apply procedures flexibility to solve problems. </span></p>								</div>

<p>Math culture starts with building a guiding math vision. The math vision will help your team develop common language and in turn work toward building a math culture in your school or classroom. Math culture can feel overwhelming, but with a clear math vision you&#8217;ll be well on your way to developing math culture to help your students achieve more than they thought possible. </p>

<p>As a teacher, sometimes it feels overwhelming or impossible to change the culture of your school. However, I want to encourage you to press play on this episode and think about the ways you already change culture&#8230; in your classroom and with your colleagues. </p>

<p>Teachers are the change makers in schools. You have the power in our schools to partner with administration and leadership to make real change. </p>
