<p>August has a way of pulling our attention straight to curriculum—What unit am I starting with? Which standards do I need to cover? What assessments do I need to give? But before we ask students to solve challenging problems, explain their reasoning, disagree with a classmate, or share an idea they aren’t sure about, there’s another question we need to ask: <strong>Do they believe their mathematical thinking belongs here?</strong></p>



<p>In Episode 222 of <em>Math Chat Podcast</em>, we’re talking about why the first week of math is about more than procedures and getting to know students. It’s our first opportunity to establish who we are going to be as a mathematical community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Belonging Makes Learning Possible</h2>



<p>Belonging doesn’t come before learning—it makes the kind of learning we want possible. Students are far more willing to take mathematical risks when they trust that their ideas, questions, mistakes, and unfinished thinking have a place in the classroom.</p>



<p>That means the work of building a community of problem solvers begins before we ever ask students to tackle the first big problem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Get to Know Your Mathematicians</h2>



<p>A math survey can tell you so much more than a student’s favorite subject or preferred activity. It can help you uncover how students currently see themselves as mathematicians, what makes them feel successful, what they do when they’re stuck, and how comfortable they are sharing uncertain thinking.</p>



<p>We’re not simply learning about our students—we’re learning about their relationship with mathematics. And that information can shape the community we intentionally build around them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Don’t Let Those Surveys Sit in a Drawer</h2>



<p>Teacher friend, please don’t have 27 students pour their mathematical hearts out to you and then file those surveys away. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f605.png" alt="😅" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> The real value comes from looking for patterns in what students tell you about mistakes, speed, confidence, asking for help, and working with others.</p>



<p>Suddenly, that first-week survey becomes meaningful data you can use to create a math classroom where students feel understood and supported.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Let Your Students Help Shape the Math Norms</h2>



<p>Instead of beginning Day 1 with a laminated list of math classroom norms, consider building those norms around what your students actually need. If students are afraid of mistakes, struggle with speed, hesitate to explain their thinking, or rely immediately on the teacher for help, those patterns can guide the agreements your community creates.</p>



<p>Math norms then become more than classroom rules. They become shared agreements about <strong>what it means to be a member of your mathematical community.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Norms Have to Be Experienced</h2>



<p>Writing “Mistakes help us learn” on the wall doesn’t automatically make students feel safe enough to make one. Students need opportunities to experience the norm through the way we respond to incorrect answers, make space for multiple strategies, provide think time, and invite students to build on one another’s ideas.</p>



<p>Those first mathematical experiences teach students far more about your classroom culture than any poster ever could.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Belonging Runs Through Everything We Do</h2>



<p>Belonging isn’t an isolated piece of a strong math classroom—it runs through the entire community of problem solvers. Students need it to participate in Thinking Routines, persevere through Word Problem Workshop, discuss strategies during Purposeful Fluency, honestly reflect through Student-Engaged Assessment, and engage in Strategic Instruction that responds to who they are as learners.</p>



<p>Belonging isn’t one more thing we’re adding to math. It’s what allows students to meaningfully engage in mathematics.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Feels Obvious to Us Is New to Students</h2>



<p>Have you ever stayed at someone else’s house and opened every cabinet trying to find a coffee mug? That is how students can feel on the first day of school when they don’t yet know where materials belong, how to ask for help, or what happens next.</p>



<p>The routines that feel automatic to us have not become automatic for them yet. Before students can confidently navigate the classroom, we have to make the invisible expectations visible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Chaos Is Often a Routine Problem</h2>



<p>We often assume classroom chaos is a behavior problem, but many frustrating moments begin with a routine that hasn’t been clearly taught, practiced, or refined. Instead of immediately adding another consequence, consider whether students need a clearer process and another opportunity to practice it.</p>



<p>Routines create habits, habits build independence, and independence leads to ownership. That progression can transform the way students participate in the classroom community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Routines Create Freedom</h2>



<p>From airports and operating rooms to coffee shops and football teams, routines create safety, trust, and efficiency. They aren’t boring or restrictive—they remove friction so people can focus on what actually matters.</p>



<p>The same is true in our classrooms. When predictable structures fade into the background, students have more energy for collaboration, problem-solving, and mathematical thinking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Thinking Routines Make Space for Mathematical Thinking</h2>



<p>Classroom routines are not only about behavior. Thinking routines give students a predictable way to begin engaging with mathematics through moves like noticing, wondering, predicting, estimating, explaining, and comparing.</p>



<p>When students no longer have to spend energy figuring out what the teacher wants, they can use that energy to solve problems. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Let the Routine Stay Constant While the Math Changes</h2>



<p>This is one of the reasons I love <strong><a href="https://monamath.com/book/">Word Problem Workshop</a></strong>. Students become familiar with a consistent flow: think, discuss, share, and reflect.</p>



<p>The routine remains steady while the mathematical ideas continue to change and grow. That consistency allows the structure to fade into the background so student thinking can take center stage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Classroom Procedures Must Be Practiced</h2>



<p>One of the biggest beginning-of-the-year mistakes is assuming a classroom routine is established after we explain it once. Students need to see it, practice it, reflect, try again, and celebrate their progress.</p>

<p>Think about one part of your classroom that felt chaotic last year—transitions, partner work, materials, independent practice, or word problems. Was it truly a behavior problem, or was it a routine that needed to be taught, practiced, and refined?</p>

<p>Every August, teachers carefully create posters reminding students that mistakes help us learn, everyone can do math, and every idea deserves respect. <p>In Episode 220 of <em>Math Chat Podcast</em>, we’re talking about why effective math classroom norms require more than the right words. They must be reflected in the way we respond to mistakes, hold students accountable, invite reflection, and make everyday instructional decisions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Poster Isn’t the Problem</h2>



<p>I don’t think we have a classroom norms problem—I think we have a follow-through problem. A norm isn’t something we simply hang on the wall. It’s something you&#8217;re willing to defend with your decisions.</p>



<p>Before creating another beautiful poster, we need to ask a more important question: <strong>What will students actually experience in this classroom?</strong> Because students don’t learn our norms by reading them—they learn them by living them. So, instead of starting with catchy phrases for the wall, let’s start with <strong>five beliefs worth defending through our everyday decisions.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. <strong>Every idea deserves to be understood before it’s evaluated.</strong></h2>



<p>Saying that every idea deserves to be understood does not mean every answer is correct. It means that when students share unfinished or incorrect thinking, we choose curiosity before correction.</p>



<p>Questions like “Tell me more” and “How did you get that?” communicate that student thinking is worth exploring. In the episode, we’ll look at how this small shift can strengthen mathematical discourse and help students take greater risks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. <strong>Accountability never requires shame.</strong></h2>



<p>High expectations and student dignity are not opposites—they belong together. Public embarrassment, call-outs, and fear-based consequences may create compliance in the moment, but they do not build responsibility.</p>



<p>We’ll unpack what it can look like to hold students accountable while preserving trust, belonging, and respect. This is one belief I’m always willing to defend, teacher friend.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Reflection should change tomorrow.</strong></h2>



<p>A completed reflection worksheet does not automatically create a reflective learner. Real reflection helps students recognize what worked, where they struggled, and what they will try differently next time.</p>



<p>When reflection influences future action, students begin developing greater awareness and ownership of their learning. Otherwise, what looks like reflection may simply be recall.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Relationships aren’t built during icebreakers.</strong></h2>



<p>Strong classroom relationships are not created through one icebreaker during the first week of school. They grow through thousands of small moments—greeting students, noticing changes, celebrating progress, keeping promises, and responding carefully when mistakes happen.</p>



<p>Those daily interactions communicate something far more powerful than any community-building activity: <strong>You are known, valued, and safe here.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Your classroom already has norms.</strong></h2>



<p>Every classroom has norms, whether they are written down or not. Students are constantly noticing who gets called on, whose ideas are valued, whether speed is rewarded, and whether it is safe to be wrong.</p>



<p>Their answers to those questions become the real norms of the classroom. The poster may describe the community we hope to create, but the student experience reveals the community we actually have.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Start With the Experience You Want to Create</h2>



<p>As you prepare for a new school year, don’t begin by asking what your math classroom norms should say. Begin by deciding what you want students to experience every day—and which decisions will help make that experience real.</p>



<p>Belonging is built when we listen before correcting, expect excellence without shame, value reasoning over speed, and remind every learner that their ideas matter. When students believe they belong, they take risks—and those risks are where real mathematical thinking begins.</p>

<p>A classroom of problem solvers cannot exist unless every student believes they belong in the mathematics happening there. Throughout this series, we’ve explored Word Problem Workshop, thinking routines, purposeful fluency, strategic instruction, and student-engaged assessment—but belonging is the strand that weaves them all together.</p>



<p>In Episode 219 of <em>Math Chat Podcast</em>, we’re looking at what it really means to create a math community where every student knows their ideas matter, their voice has value, and they have an important role to play—even when they are stuck, unsure, or still working through their thinking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">From Spectator to Community Member</h2>



<p>Sometimes belonging begins with one small invitation. I share a recent experience at a local jam session where a musician intentionally brought my family into the moment, transforming us from spectators into participants.</p>



<p>That simple interaction is a powerful reminder for our classrooms. As teachers, we may facilitate the learning, but our role is also to make sure every student sees themselves as someone who belongs in the mathematical community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Every Student Has a Role to Play</h2>



<p>One of my favorite reminders for students is that we all learn from one another. When a student shares an idea, asks a question, or tries a strategy, they are not only learning—they are helping their classmates learn too.</p>



<p>Belonging means students know their thinking is welcome even when it is unfinished or incorrect. Frustration, mistakes, and uncertainty are not reasons to step out of the community; they are expected parts of doing mathematics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Belonging Lives in Every Part of the Math Block</h2>



<p>Belonging isn&#8217;t one more thing to add to your day—it&#8217;s woven into every part of your math block. Every routine, lesson, discussion, and reflection is an opportunity to help students feel seen, valued, and capable.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Start with Clear Routines and Strong Relationships</h2>



<p>Along with the ideas in this resource, I’m a firm believer in a few simple practices that make a meaningful difference: establish clear routines and expectations, practice those routines through purposeful activities, and make time for relationships, mindset, and reflection from day one.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Student-Engaged Assessment Matters</h2>



<p>Teachers spend countless hours collecting data, analyzing results, and making instructional decisions. But what if the people who benefit most from that data were actually the students themselves?</p>



<p>Student-engaged assessment invites students into the learning process by helping them understand where they are, where they&#8217;re going, and what their next step should be. When students can make sense of their own learning, assessment becomes empowering instead of intimidating.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Real Purpose of Assessment</h2>



<p>The purpose of assessment has never been to collect grades or fill spreadsheets. It&#8217;s about understanding learners so we can help them grow.</p>



<p>If assessment helps teachers know what to teach next, shouldn&#8217;t students know that too? This episode explores why involving students in the assessment process leads to greater ownership, motivation, and confidence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking Beyond the Data</h2>



<p>It&#8217;s easy for data to become numbers on a spreadsheet or colored dots on a graph. But behind every data point is a student with strengths, challenges, and potential.</p>



<p>I share a personal story from my first year teaching third grade and how that experience completely changed the way I viewed assessment. It became the beginning of a journey toward helping students use their own data to grow without losing their love of learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Three Ways to Engage Students in Assessment</h2>



<p>Student-engaged assessment doesn&#8217;t have to be complicated. In this episode, I share three practical ways to make assessment part of everyday learning.</p>



<p>First, students need <strong>clear learning targets</strong> they actually understand. Then, they need regular opportunities to <strong>self-assess and reflect</strong> on their progress. Finally, they need <strong>feedback that connects directly to the learning goal</strong>, helping them identify meaningful next steps instead of simply pointing out mistakes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Assessment That Moves Learning Forward</h2>



<p>Feedback is most powerful when it helps students answer one simple question: <strong>&#8220;What&#8217;s my next step?&#8221;</strong></p>



<p>When feedback stays connected to the learning goal, students begin to see assessment as a tool for growth rather than judgment. Over time, they become active participants in their own learning instead of passive recipients of grades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Making the Shift</h2>



<p>Student-engaged assessment isn&#8217;t another program to add to your day. It&#8217;s a mindset shift that can begin with something as simple as unpacking a learning target, using a quick self-check, or asking students to reflect before they leave class.</p>



<p>As you continue weaving together the strands of a classroom of problem solvers, remember that this is one strand you can introduce gradually. Small, consistent opportunities for reflection often lead to the biggest shifts in student ownership.</p>

<p>By now, you may be wondering, <em>&#8220;When do I actually teach?&#8221;</em> It&#8217;s one of the biggest misconceptions about student-centered math instruction. In this episode, we&#8217;re talking about <strong>strategic instruction</strong> and why the teacher&#8217;s role isn&#8217;t smaller—it&#8217;s more <em>intentional</em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strategic Instruction Is a Response, Not a Lesson</h2>



<p>Strategic instruction isn&#8217;t something we plan in isolation before students ever walk through the door. It&#8217;s how we respond to what students show us during learning.</p>



<p>Traditional instruction often begins with, <em>&#8220;I already know what I&#8217;m teaching today.&#8221;</em> Strategic instruction begins with a different question: <em>&#8220;I&#8217;m paying attention so I know what to teach.&#8221;</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Start with Student Thinking</h2>



<p>One of the biggest shifts in creating a classroom of problem solvers is realizing that your students are helping write tomorrow&#8217;s lesson.</p>



<p>As you walk around during Word Problem Workshop, listen to discussions, or look through exit tickets, students are constantly showing you what they understand, the strategies they&#8217;re relying on, and where they need support. Instead of wondering, <em>&#8220;What should I teach next?&#8221;</em> strategic teachers ask, <strong>&#8220;What are my students showing me that deserves my attention?&#8221;</strong></p>



<p>That&#8217;s one of the reasons Word Problem Workshop is so powerful—it gives teachers a window into student thinking, making strategic instruction intentional instead of predictable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">You Don&#8217;t Have to Teach Everything</h2>



<p>Teachers notice a lot during a lesson—but strategic instruction isn&#8217;t about fixing every misconception.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">This Is Where the Teaching Happens</h2>



<p>Student-centered instruction absolutely includes direct instruction. The difference is <strong>why</strong> it happens.</p>



<p>Sometimes it&#8217;s a quick mini lesson. Sometimes it&#8217;s a small group. Sometimes it&#8217;s highlighting a student&#8217;s strategy or asking a well-timed question. Strategic instruction is where we intentionally step in—not to take over the thinking, but to make the thinking stronger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Learning Doesn&#8217;t Stop After the Lesson</h2>



<p>One of the biggest mistakes we can make is assuming that watching equals learning.</p>



<p>After strategic instruction, students need another opportunity to apply what they&#8217;ve learned. Whether it&#8217;s another problem, a partner task, or a quick discussion, immediate practice helps students strengthen new ideas while they&#8217;re still fresh.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Making Learning Stick</h2>



<p>Reflection is what transforms strategies into lasting tools.</p>



<p>Simple questions like <em>&#8220;What strategy did we learn?&#8221;</em> or <em>&#8220;When would this strategy be helpful?&#8221;</em> encourage students to make connections, recognize patterns, and transfer their learning to new situations.</p>

<p>For many of us, it&#8217;s timed tests, flash cards, memorization, or getting the right answer as quickly as possible. But what if fluency isn&#8217;t really about speed? <p>A few years ago, I read <em>Figuring Out Fluency</em> by Jennifer Bay-Williams and John SanGiovanni, and it completely shifted my thinking. They describe fluency as developing a repertoire of strategies students can use <strong>accurately, flexibly, and efficiently</strong>—not just quickly.</p>

<p>That definition changes everything. We&#8217;re not trying to create students who memorize procedures. We&#8217;re developing a repertoire of strategies that students can use: accurately, flexibly, and efficiently.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Purposeful Fluency Starts with Understanding</h2>



<p>Fluency doesn&#8217;t exist apart from conceptual understanding. Students develop procedural fluency through reasoning, discussion, strategy development, and making sense of mathematical relationships—not by memorizing disconnected facts.</p>



<p>This idea connects beautifully to <em>Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics</em>, reminding us that the strands of mathematical proficiency work together. Strong fluency grows from deep understanding.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Changing the Story Students Believe About Math</h2>



<p>Many students grow up believing that being &#8220;good at math&#8221; means being fast. Unfortunately, that belief causes many capable mathematicians to doubt themselves before they ever have the chance to reason.</p>



<p>Purposeful fluency interrupts that story. Instead of focusing on speed, students begin noticing patterns, choosing strategies, making connections, and explaining their thinking. That shift doesn&#8217;t just build stronger mathematicians—it builds stronger mathematical identities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Purposeful Fluency Really Looks Like</h2>



<p>Purposeful fluency isn&#8217;t about drill for the sake of drill. It&#8217;s about helping students see patterns, develop strategies, discuss ideas, and understand why mathematics works.</p>



<p>Throughout the episode, I share classroom routines like <strong>Number Strings</strong>, <strong>True or False</strong>, <strong>Which One Doesn&#8217;t Belong</strong>, <strong>Choral Counting</strong>, and <strong>Counting Collections</strong>, along with games that naturally develop flexible thinking. The common thread isn&#8217;t speed—it&#8217;s reasoning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Biggest Shift Teachers Can Make</h2>



<p>One of the biggest mistakes we make is pushing students toward efficiency before they&#8217;ve had time to build understanding. We often move students away from their own strategies too quickly instead of giving them opportunities to reason, compare, and make connections.</p>



<p>The conversation explores why flexibility develops before efficiency—and why slowing down often leads to stronger fluency in the long run.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Purposeful Fluency and Word Problem Workshop</h2>



<p>Purposeful fluency fits naturally alongside Word Problem Workshop because both focus on developing flexible mathematical thinkers. Students reason, discuss, choose strategies, and make connections instead of relying on memorization alone.</p>

<p>Choose one routine, one game, or one meaningful discussion this week. Slow down enough for students to notice patterns, explain their thinking, and learn from one another. That&#8217;s where purposeful fluency begins.</p>

<p>The goal of purposeful fluency isn&#8217;t producing faster calculators. It&#8217;s helping students become flexible thinkers who understand mathematics, recognize patterns, and trust themselves to make sense of unfamiliar problems.</p>



<p>That&#8217;s the kind of fluency that lasts far beyond a timed test. And it&#8217;s the kind of fluency students need for the real world.</p>

<p>Sometimes the smallest routines create the biggest shifts in a math classroom. What might look like a simple warm-up, Number Talk, or Notice &amp; Wonder activity is actually doing much more than filling a few minutes at the beginning of your lesson.</p>



<p>Thinking routines are one of my favorite places to begin when building a classroom of problem solvers. They send a powerful message to students: <strong>Your ideas matter here.</strong> And over time, those small moments of noticing, wondering, and discussing begin to change how students see themselves as mathematicians.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Thinking Routines Are the Perfect Place to Start</h2>



<p>Last week, we talked about the six strands that make up a classroom of problem solvers. I like to think of them like a friendship bracelet—each strand strengthens the others, and every classroom creates its own unique braid.</p>



<p>Thinking routines are my favorite strand to start with because they create daily opportunities for students to reason, discuss, and experience success. Those moments become the foundation for everything that comes later.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Thinking Routines Are the Real Math</h2>



<p>It&#8217;s easy to think of warm-ups as something quick before &#8220;the real math&#8221; begins. But thinking routines are the real math.</p>



<p>These routines help students notice patterns, justify ideas, compare strategies, and listen to one another. Before students can confidently engage in rich discussions during Word Problem Workshop, they need smaller opportunities to share ideas, disagree respectfully, and build confidence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Changing the Story Students Tell Themselves About Math</h2>



<p>Many students believe math is about speed, answers, and getting things right as quickly as possible. Thinking routines interrupt that story.</p>



<p>Suddenly math becomes about noticing, wondering, discussing, and making sense. And for some students, those small moments can completely change their relationship with mathematics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Building Mathematical Identity One Conversation at a Time</h2>



<p><strong>Students have to experience themselves as thinkers before they believe they are thinkers.</strong></p>



<p>The episode shares the story of a student who struggled with confidence and often felt defeated during math. Through consistent thinking routines, he found opportunities to contribute without the pressure of having the perfect answer. Over time, his confidence grew—and that confidence began to spill into every part of math.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Favorite Thinking Routines to Try</h2>

<p>Each routine develops reasoning, flexibility, and mathematical language in different ways. And because they&#8217;re low-floor opportunities, every student can enter the conversation with confidence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Value Is in the Discussion</h2>



<p>One of the biggest mistakes I see is rushing through these routines or turning them into teacher-led mini lessons.</p>



<p>The value isn&#8217;t in getting the answer. It&#8217;s in the discussion. The pauses matter. The wondering matters. The student ideas matter. The goal isn&#8217;t simply to do a thinking routine—it&#8217;s to facilitate thinking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Perfect Partnership</h2>



<p>Thinking routines are the perfect companion to Word Problem Workshop because they strengthen the exact habits students need during Grapple and Discuss.</p>



<p>Students practice listening, reasoning, persevering, and sharing ideas in smaller, safer ways before tackling richer problems. And if discourse feels challenging during Word Problem Workshop, thinking routines are one of the best places to strengthen that muscle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Start Small, Think Big</h2>



<p>Teacher friends, keep it simple. You don&#8217;t need a new curriculum, a perfect slide deck, or an hour-long routine.</p>



<p>Start with one routine. Spend five to ten minutes. Ask questions like, <em>&#8220;What do you notice?&#8221;</em> or <em>&#8220;Who sees it differently?&#8221;</em> Then step back and listen. Students will surprise you.</p>



<p>Because the goal of thinking routines isn&#8217;t just stronger number sense—it&#8217;s stronger mathematical identity. Over time, students begin to believe, <em>&#8220;I can contribute. My thinking matters. I can make sense of math.&#8221;</em> And that&#8217;s the foundation of a classroom of problem solvers.</p>
