Transform Math Class into a Community of Problem Solvers
Let’s build problem solvers, not calculators. Word Problem Workshop book coming October 2025
As an educator, I understand the frustration that comes from not having the right support or professional development. That’s why I founded Mona Math in 2023 — to support schools in creating math classrooms that are empowering, engaging, and lead to high achievement for every student.
For most of my life, I didn’t enjoy math, and as a new teacher, I was overwhelmed and uninspired when it came to teaching math. But over time, I realized that the problem wasn’t math itself—it was how I was teaching math.
Overtime, and lots of research, I shifted my teaching to a student-centered routine that became Word Problem Workshop. After 11 years of refining and seeing incredible success in my own classroom, I began sharing it with hundreds of teachers and the results speak for themselves. It’s not just a theory– it’s a teacher-tested, student-approved 5 step daily routine that works. I’m excited to share my journey and this proven method in my upcoming book, Word Problem Workshop: 5 Steps to Creating a Classroom of Problem Solvers set to be published in Fall 2025.
My work has been featured on MiddleWeb.com, and I am a sought-after speaker at top conferences such as NCTM and ISTM, where I share my expertise in creating classrooms where all students are problem solvers.
Ready to make a lasting impact in your classroom or district? Let’s work together to create math classrooms where every student thrives.
Are word problems a struggle? I know they are for so many of us K-5 teachers. Word Problem Workshop offers a structured approach to develop students’ problem-solving skills so that every K-5 learner engages in math and enjoys tackling word problems.
As a former teacher with 15 years of teaching and coaching experience in Chicago, I’ve led PLC teams, supported the growth of a student-centered math program, and served as a school-based math coach. In these roles, I’ve designed and facilitated professional development, coached teachers, and led lesson study — all with the goal of creating sustained change in math instruction.
After years of feeling like a “math avoider,” I discovered how to engage my students and help them love math — and, along the way, I fell in love with teaching it myself.
If you want to feel confident teaching math, you’re in the right place.
But I’m so much more than a teacher, as so are you! I’m also a proud mom, wife to my partner in all things DIY, and a lover of local coffee shops. Originally from Michigan, I grew up fishing and swimming at the best little lake, but found my true home in Chicago, where I’ve lived for 17 years.
Now, I can confidently say I love teaching math — and with the right strategies and support, you can too.
