On Today’s Episode Clear Expectations Set a High Bar for High Math Engagement:
Engagement is probably the number one question I get as a math coach and consultant… because it’s just HARD to get student to engage in math. But it is also probably the single most important factor to student success in math. If students aren’t engaged then they will not be able to learn math and reach their fullest potential.
I have three ideas to share with you to get high math engagement in your classroom
1. Experiences
You have to plan experiences that will allow students to get excited about math class. I’m not talking about just math tasks and problem solving opportunities. I’m talking about experiences that will allow students to let down their guard and fully be present in math class. We are working against a lot of math drama, trauma, anxiety, and backgrounds that aren’t always favorable for math class… right? So that means we have to create some experiences at the start of the school year that allow students to see that we want them in our class, that they belong and they can show up as themselves.
What do I mean by experiences. I’m talking about community building experiences like sharing your “math stories”. These types of things…
- Build trust
- Build relationships
- Build mindsets
- Build norms
Those are all things that your students need to be successfully engaged in math class.
They also need expectations. It is not fair of us to ask students to meet expectations they are unaware of. So you need to make them clear! Helping students understand what to do, how you want them to do it… what it looks like and sounds like.
2. Expectations
- Make them clear
- Demonstrate them
- Practice expectations without judgment
- Give accountability to support
3. Feedback
- Discuss the role of feedback
- Practice feedback & reflection
- Give students feedback
- Ask for feedback
