
Every morning, I make coffee the exact same way. I don’t need motivation or a detailed plan because the routine has removed the decision-making—and that is exactly what strong classroom routines can do for students.

What Feels Obvious to Us Is New to Students
Have you ever stayed at someone else’s house and opened every cabinet trying to find a coffee mug? That is how students can feel on the first day of school when they don’t yet know where materials belong, how to ask for help, or what happens next.
The routines that feel automatic to us have not become automatic for them yet. Before students can confidently navigate the classroom, we have to make the invisible expectations visible.
Chaos Is Often a Routine Problem
We often assume classroom chaos is a behavior problem, but many frustrating moments begin with a routine that hasn’t been clearly taught, practiced, or refined. Instead of immediately adding another consequence, consider whether students need a clearer process and another opportunity to practice it.
Routines create habits, habits build independence, and independence leads to ownership. That progression can transform the way students participate in the classroom community.
Routines Create Freedom
From airports and operating rooms to coffee shops and football teams, routines create safety, trust, and efficiency. They aren’t boring or restrictive—they remove friction so people can focus on what actually matters.
The same is true in our classrooms. When predictable structures fade into the background, students have more energy for collaboration, problem-solving, and mathematical thinking.
Thinking Routines Make Space for Mathematical Thinking
Classroom routines are not only about behavior. Thinking routines give students a predictable way to begin engaging with mathematics through moves like noticing, wondering, predicting, estimating, explaining, and comparing.
When students no longer have to spend energy figuring out what the teacher wants, they can use that energy to solve problems. Let the Routine Stay Constant While the Math Changes
This is one of the reasons I love Word Problem Workshop. Students become familiar with a consistent flow: think, discuss, share, and reflect.
The routine remains steady while the mathematical ideas continue to change and grow. That consistency allows the structure to fade into the background so student thinking can take center stage.
Classroom Procedures Must Be Practiced
One of the biggest beginning-of-the-year mistakes is assuming a classroom routine is established after we explain it once. Students need to see it, practice it, reflect, try again, and celebrate their progress.

One Routine to Reconsider
Think about one part of your classroom that felt chaotic last year—transitions, partner work, materials, independent practice, or word problems. Was it truly a behavior problem, or was it a routine that needed to be taught, practiced, and refined?
